Ugo O. Gagliardi

UGO O. GAGLIARDI was born in Naples, Italy, received a Diploma in mathematics and physics in 1951, and Dr. Ing. (E.E.) in 1954, both from the University of Naples. He then became an instructor in Electrical Engineering at his alma mater, leaving for a Fulbright Scholarship at Columbia University in New York in 1955.

From 1956 to 1961, Prof. Gagliardi was first Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Kansas State University. He then joined the staff of Dunlap & Associates of Darien, Connecticut, an R&D firm specializing in military man-computer systems, serving there between 1961 and 1965 in a number of positions, the final one being that of the Chief Scientist for the firm's Systems Engineering division.

Prof. Gagliardi served as the computer graphics section chief at the USAF Decision Sciences Laboratory in Bedford, Massachusetts from 1965 to 1966.

From 1966 to July 2000, Prof. Gagliardi served on the faculty at Harvard University, teaching graduate courses in software engineering, computing systems architecture, operating systems and database design. He was named Professor of the Practice of Computer Engineering in 1974, and Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Computer Engineering in 1983. After his retirement in 2000 he was invited by the Harvard Graduate School of Design to offer a research seminar on database technology and its relevance to formalizing design information. The seminar & related research has shown that the essence of design information (architecture), in fields as diverse as built environment, computer software systems, biological organisms, is a set of relationships. The latter can be formalized as the schema of an object oriented database.

Since 1966, concurrent with his duties at Harvard, he has served as VP of Technical Operations for Interactive Sciences Corp., Braintree, Massachusetts; Director of HIS Technical Office and Director of Engineering, Boston, Computer Operations, Honeywell Information Systems, Inc., Waltham, Massachusetts, where as Chief Architect, he directed the development of the Series 60 product line of Honeywell Information Systems.

In 1975, Prof. Gagliardi founded General Systems Group, Inc., a company he heads to this day. GSG, Inc., is an engineering firm specializing in the design, implementation, installation and operation of information processing systems for industry and government.

From 1985 to 1991 Prof. Gagliardi was a member of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council Panel for the Institute of Computer Sciences and Technology of the National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST: formerly National Bureau of Standards). He served as the Panel's Chairman from 1988 to 1991. Prof. Gagliardi is listed in Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World.
